Good responses to common justifications

Recently the NY Times published an Op-ed by Gary Steiner from a truly vegan point of view, not the sort of half-assery usually published by folks like Michael Pollan and Mark Bittman.

Then they published some letters to the editor about the Op-ed, most of which made the usual excuses. I read them and moved on, not having the wherewithal to push back on these most common excuses.

Luckily, Eccentric Vegan, from Vegan Soapbox, has the wherewithal I did not! She responds to many of the comments in this great post: Backlash.

I know I've been posting a lot about various vegan nutritional sources, for things like Vitamin A, D, B, iron, calcium. I guess i finally got completely exasperated by people who want to tell me how being veg made them sick.

So I especially appreciated this link round-up from Vegan Soapbox, discussing good sources of iron, but also debunking the myth that veg*ns have higher incidences of iron deficiency than non-veg*ns.

Including me...as my blood test from a couple of weeks ago proved.

Are you a veg*n who knows your levels? Are you in normal range?

Yup.

And boy, do I have a post in me about how imperfect I am!

Hat tip to Vegan Soapbox for pointing me to another great vegan blog, Jack Norris RD.

Following on to yesterday's post about B12 deficiencies, Norris tackles iron deficiencies...another common concern I hear from non-veg*ns, or common excuse I hear from former veg*ns.

Make sure to check out the comments, because Norris is extremely responsive to reader questions.

Hat tip to Vegan Soapbox for highlighting the stats from a newly published survey not only on how many veg*ns there are, but how many non-veg*ns are considering it or order veg*n when out in restaurants.

Maybe that plays into what I posted last week about restaurants needing to be mindful of veg*ns because they "dictate the order"?

In any case, there are over 7 million veg*ns living in the U.S. Including me!

I gotta call my S.O. and have him Tivo this, because while I may not be a regular Oprah viewer, I know that when she covers something it has impact.

Tomorrow, according to Vegan.com and Vegan Soapbox, Oprah is covering how we treat animals being raised for food.

Will you watch, can you? Frankly, it's hard for me. I never watched the recent videos of animals being abused at a California slaughterhouse. Why should I? I already don't eat animals, right? Why put myself through watching something I find torturous?

I don't know. But I'm going to Tivo Oprah's show tomorrow (if I can catch my S.O. and if he remembers) and I might even watch it.

Will you?

Eccentric Vegan isn't too happy with how a NY Times writer (and author of a new guide to being a vegan in NYC) answers someone's question about how to eat out as vegan other than actually going to a veg restaurant. Eccentric Vegan comes up with a much better answer, which boils down to:

Ask for what you want and explain why.

It is far more common for me to encounter restaurants and wait staff who are happy to help than it is for me to encounter pretentious dicks who don't care if you ever come back to their restaurant.

Sure I tell you every time I encounter one of the bad 'uns, but I hope I also make clear that 90% of the time I am accommodated...when I'm traveling, when I'm ordering room service, when I'm at a cheap diner and when I'm at a fancy restaurant that isn't built around catering to my needs.

but you really do have to be unafraid of asking the questions, and of telling the waiter why you're asking. Telling them helps them to be proactive and anticipate your needs. And most of them will really try to do that.

They really well.

Snotty NY Times guy's response was find a veg. restaurant or brown bag it.

Silly, silly NY Times guy.
