While I won't miss being portrayed as a turnip (no, I don't think the illustration on the left resembles me at all!) I will miss a monthly opportunity to make over 600K people think a little differently about what they eat.
It was truly a labor of love for me, and after five years, this is the final Silicon Veggie:
It's a pretty good one to be my final column, since it revisits my philosophy about taking as many steps as we can towards ethical, humane behavior. And that until someone is perfect, I'm still in favor of doing what we can until we can do better.
And I guess now I'll talk about that here on my sorely neglected little Vox blog. And I hope all 2 of you readers (you know who you are) enjoy it :)
Just got a call from my editor over at The Metro.
Seems they are trying to stay alive by discontinuing using any freelancers as regular columnists. I guess they'll make staff reporters just work a little harder.
That means it's goodbye to Silicon Veggie after more than five years!
I landed Silicon Veggie purely on the strength of the restaurant reviews I used to do on my personal blog.
I never met the editor who hired me. I never met the original editor's replacement. My references were my blog, and our interactions were completely on the phone or via email. And oh by the way, I just emailed the then-food editor and told them they ought to have a veggie column, given this is the hippy-dippy bay Area. They weren't out there looking to add one.
Of course I do have this blog, so I still have a channel for my vegan evangelizing. But it was nice to have something pushing me to write a considered 400-word essay every month. Will I push myself the same way on my own?
Le sigh.
This month's Silicon Veggie explores the question: Would you eat the eggs of chickens you raised?
Coincidentally, I just saw a thread on Stephanie Ernst's Animal Rights blog for Change.org, where someone in the comments asked the same question.
The consensus in those comments seemed to be: You can still be kind/ethical if you eat your chicken's eggs. But you're not really a vegan.
What do you think?
There's a new veggie restaurant in town, and I gave it a brief review in this month's Silicon Veggie column.
Bottom line: nom nom nom
Now, it's still in the Asian, faux-meat vein, but more Vietnamese-inspired than Chinese-inspired.
It's got a big menu and is waaay reasonably priced.
Try the rice pudding with the funky name: Pulut Hitaum. You'll have to read the article to learn more :)
I'm a glutton for punishment, so I decided to extend the discussion of the controversy over President Obama's decision to go with a breeder dog. You can find me trying to raise the flag again in my Silicon Veggie article, entitled Obama's Dog and Your Dinner.
All about how choosing that dog meant Obama did what "can be done, instead of what should be done". And how that's how most people approach food. They eat meat because they can, not because the should.
I await the nasty emails :)
This month's Silicon Veggie is a restaurant review. I try out Cafe Artemis in Campbell, CA. Mediterranean restaurants are often a great way for veg*ns to go, and Cafe Artemis is no except. You can read all about it here.
This month's Silicon Veggie is about how I prepared, so as not to starve while on my Africa trip.
I took a little more care to pack food stuffs on this trip, because the prospect of starving for ten days was a lot more daunting than my usual 2-3 day jaunts around the U.S.
Luckily it all worked out, although it's true that I did lose a few pounds while on the trip. But that's certainly no harm, given I'm trying to do that anyway :)
This month's Silicon Veggie is about different approaches to going veg: Do you ease your way in? Or do you go cold turkey (OK, admit it here, pun somewhat intended.)
I definitely believe one of those two approaches worked for me, as I explain in the article. What has worked for you?
