Thanks to Stephanie from Change.org's Animal Rights blog for pointing me to not one, but two apps for the iPhone that help you make sure that you're about to purchase cruelty-free cosmetics and personal care items.
BNB is a searchable app for your iphone or ipod touch that helps you make an informed decision about cruelty-free purchasing anywhere, any time, at home or in-store.
Features include:
- Multiple search option, including companies who do test, companies who don't test, search by product type
- Check if the product is vegan-friendly
- Tagging favorites
Know which companies are cruelty-free! Use this hand shopping guide for the iPone or iPod touch to look up cosmetic, personal care and household product companies while you're on the go.
Features include:
- Browse alphabetically or by category
- Direct links to company web sites
When I was a vegetarian, not a vegan, Boca was perhaps my favorite brand. Particularly their "chicken" patties, which were awesome little breaded "chicken" patties, perfect with a little avocado on some sourdough bread.
Perhaps a bit late in the game, but Stephanie from the Change.org Animal Rights blog inspired me to provide a few vegan shopping resources, after she published her own handy dandy list. Please read the comments on her post too, as there is some controversy over Alternative Outfitters and whether they use sweatshops. Luckily, Change.org has a slew of blogs, including one about fair trader, so later Stephanie is able to point us to a great fair trade resource for vegan shoes.
Change.org (not to be confused with the President-elect's own Change.gov) is collecting transformative ideas to present to the new President on Inauguration Day. They are collecting ideas across a diverse set of topics, of which I would venture to guess "Animal Rights" is not the most popular.
People suggest ideas, and then others can vote for them. Ultimately the top ideas in each category will be presented. So, I assume that despite animal rights not being as high on the list to most people as subjects like heath care or the environment, at least the top ideas from every category will make it through.
I have proposed an idea that, to my mind, actually crosses subjects and is about animal rights, health care and the environment! I think we need a PSA campaign to educate people on the connections between how we eat and both our own and the planet's health.
It's really the trifecta of motivations: your health, the planet's health, plus a more compassionate and humane lifestyle as the bonus.
Apparently my idea currently needs 35 votes to make it to the second round. Doesn't sound like that much, right?
So, if you're at all intrigued by the idea, I hope you will vote.
And if you've submitted your own idea, please let us all know in the comments!
Over at PETA Prime they have a nice long personal essay about realizing that being vegan is the one sure way to personally tackle climate change. The author cites several pieces of info I've blogged before - like the fact that going vegan saves more carbon emissions per year than switching to a hybrid car (and is cheaper too!)
My husband and I are still turning off the lights and washing the clothes in cold water, but now we know that one of the best things we can do is to spread the word about the connection between climate change and what’s on people’s dinner plates. Talk about an inconvenient truth.
Change.org is asking members to come up with and vote for ideas to present to the Obama administration on Inauguration Day.
This month's Silicon Veggie is a heartfelt, if ambivalent, essay on Proposition 2. If you read my guest post on Change.org, you go a sneak preview of this article.
